Some cities ask to be visited. Others ask to be lived.
London has always felt like the latter.
There is a certain romance in arriving just as the city begins to stir. The quiet hum of black cabs, the morning light softening rows of Georgian façades, and the anticipation of a weekend.
London is still half asleep when my plane landed. The sky still dark as the black cab pulls away from Heathrow, but somewhere between Notting Hill and Kensington the morning begins to brighten. After winding through Kensington’s tree-lined streets, I arrive at The Milestone Hotel. Nestled opposite Kensington Palace, it feels less like a hotel and more like a private London residence, where every detail invites you to slow down.
In the Hermès Suite, framed vintage silk scarfs hang along the white velvet walls like a work of art, while morning light filters softly through the windows. Outside, a fine London drizzle settles over the gardens. Inside, tea arrived on fine china.
A cup of tea. A warm bath. Scone by the window.
Then comes my favourite part: dressing for the evening.
Getting ready for the ballet has always been one of my favourite rituals. I found the dress months earlier and kept it aside for this evening. A vintage-inspired silhouette paired with gold earrings and a pair of ballerina block heels. I linger before the mirror before making my way across the city.
London reveals itself differently from the back seat of a black cab. As Kensington falls quietly behind me, the streets begin to grow busier. White stucco townhouses give way to bustling streets, and soon Covent Garden appears.
This evening, I was welcomed beneath the chandeliers of the Royal Opera House.
Tonight’s performance is La Fille Mal Gardée.
One of classical ballet’s most beloved comedies, it delights not through grandeur alone but through wit, warmth and playfulness. Gentle humour woven into every gesture and glance, reminding me that ballet is capable of laughter as much as elegance. Colourful ribbons twirl around the maypole as pastel costumes bloom beneath the stage lights, while the orchestra carries each scene with effortless charm.
When the curtain falls, the city has grown quieter.
The crowds have thinned since I arrived.
Rain lingers on the cobblestones, reflecting the warm glow of street lamps lighting the streets as I wander a little longer through Covent Garden’s theatre district. A handful of tables are still occupied inside little restaurants, where wine and shared pizzas linger beneath warm amber light. Conversations drift into the cool evening air as theatregoers make their way through the square, still carrying the excitement of a wonderful performance. Everyone seems reluctant for the evening to end.
As I make my way towards the waiting cab, there is no desire to rush the evening. Some of London’s most memorable moments are found not inside its landmarks, but in the quiet spaces between them, soaking the atmosphere.
Back at the hotel, tucked beneath the covers.
A nourishing night mask.
A chapter of Pride & Prejudice.
The distant sound of rain against the windows.
The city sleeping outside.
Every city has its own rhythm.
London’s is in the unhurried tea, theatre curtains rising, conversations lingering over dinner and evenings that seem reluctant to end.
Perhaps that is why I always return.
Not to see its landmark again,
but to experience it differently each time.
